Let’s look at the biggest MPVs in the US and EU by their actual boot dimensions1. We will not look at their other qualities – like comfort or reliability, this is purely about size, because when car camping, the size matters. These are the top 10 MPVs (multi-purpose vehicles/minivans) with the largest boot length, width and height in Europe and the United States.
1 As opposed to measuring boot volume by litres – which is ok to gauge the overall size and rank each car, but it’s not very applicable in real life. We use the actual boot length, width and height.
Multi-Purpose Vehicles, or MPVs, are a popular choice for those needing a spacious and versatile vehicle. These vehicles are known for their ability to comfortably seat multiple passengers and their ample cargo space. In Europe and the US, there are several MPVs that stand out for their size and capabilities. MPVs beat SUVs, another popular choice, by their size – they offer more boot space, headroom and often boot versatility too.
This list has been compiled using our best cars for camping database and car comparison feature. I’ve ranked these cars using a score that combines the boot length x width x height, therefore scoring the overall boot size. This means that even though a car has a very long boot, its height could bring the score below another car’s score, with a slightly shorter but taller boot. Of course, if all you need is a tall boot, regardless of its height, the order of the cars could differ – but you can rest assured that these are still the best options for you. Or you could always head to our best cars for camping database and filter cars with the longest boot – that easy!
Boot size is one of the key factors in our NimbleCamper car rating too (although to reflect all aspects of car camping, we weigh boot dimensions together with comfort and consumption scores to get a more well-rounded car rating). This rating isn’t reflected in this post, all the cars here are ranked purely by their boot size.

Top 5 biggest MPVs (multi purpose vehicle) in Europe 🇪🇺
The winner – EU MPV with the longest boot of them all: Hyundai Staria
The Hyundai Staria has the longest boot compared to all other available MPVs in Europe and the UK and almost the tallest boot height. Although it’s not the highest, it’s still high enough to secure first place, combined with its boot length, giving you the most storage space.
Hyundai Staria boot dimensions
- boot length: 242cm/95 inches
- boot height: 136cm/53.5 inches
- boot width (wheel arches): 125cm/49 inches
There is one caveat though – although it’s sold as an MPV, it’s actually even longer than a Multivan – which kinda makes it a van-based MPV, or just a type of van classified as a people carrier. It is 5.25m long compared to Multivan’s 4.97m or Caddy Maxi’s 4.85m total body length.
Other vehicle dimensions (width and height) are about the same. Keep this in mind when planning a trip as it is going to stick out of standard car parking places quite a bit more than you are used to in other MPVs. With this in mind, we could include the Multivan in this top #1 spot too – it’s about the same size as the Staria, albeit not being classified as an MPV.
It also comes in a transporter version, offering even the most cargo space, with three seats in the front.
Hyundai Staria is also not available in the UK (as of Feb 2023), but that might change.
2nd largest EU MPV boot: Fiat Doblò XL High Roof
The Fiat Doblò XL offers a long boot, but what sets the High Roof version apart is its unusually high boot for any MPV – actually the highest you will find. This feature means that despite the boot length being shorter than other MPVs on this list, you will get +25cm/10inches more cargo space or, more importantly when camping – more headroom.
This means you will be able to build a better camping conversion and sit easily even with more storage space underneath. Read more about why Fiat Doblo XL High Roof is a good camping car in our review.
Fiat Doblò XL High Roof boot dimensions
- boot length: 217cm/85.5inches
- boot height: 150cm/60 inches
- boot width (wheel arches): 126cm/49.6 inches
3rd largest EU MPV boot: VW Caddy Maxi Life
A long-time favourite, the VW Caddy Maxi is probably the most ideal minivan because it offers the best of both worlds – a very long and also pretty tall boot. Top it off with some good storage options and a flat boot opening and you have one perfect car for camping. Read more in our VW Caddy Maxi Life for camping review.
VW Caddy Maxi Life boot dimensions
- boot length: 217cm/85.5inches
- boot height: 150cm/60 inches
- boot width (wheel arches): 126cm/49.6 inches
4th largest EU MPV boot: Chrysler Grand Voyager
This US-made car does what US-made cars do best – it’s very a large family car with a huge cargo space. It offers the second-longest boot on this list, but also the second-lowest too. Lots of legroom for lying down but less headroom for sitting up.
Compared to other similar US seven seats minivans, like the Chrysler Pacifica, Toyota Sienna or Honda Odyssey, the Grand Voyager is much easier to obtain in the EU and so is its twin Dodge Grand Caravan.
Chrysler Grand Voyager boot dimensions
- boot length: 230cm/90.5inches
- boot height: 115cm/45 inches
- boot width (wheel arches): 123cm/48.5 inches
5th largest EU MPV boot: Peugeot Rifter Long
The Peugeot Rifter (Long – LWB version) is a representative of a family of cars based on the same dimensions and body, just different interior and exterior designs: Opel (Vauxhall) Combo XL, Citroen Berlingo Long, Toyota ProAce City or Rifter’s predecessor: Peugeot Partner L2.
The Rifter is the youngest of the family and therefore offers a more modern interior, safety systems, infotainment system and good fuel economy.
Peugeot Rifter Long boot dimensions
- boot length: 223cm/87.8inches
- boot height: 112cm/44 inches
- boot width (wheel arches): 119cm/46.8 inches

Top 5 biggest MPVs in the United States 🇺🇸
In the US, MPVs are called minivans – they are everyday cars that offer the most space, usually with 7 or 9 seats. They tend to be 10-20cm/4-8inches longer but around 5-10cm/2-4inches lower than EU MPVs.
They are also more luxurious, given that their target market in the US is (and always has been) families, whereas, in the EU, the MPV is a hybrid of a commercial van and a family car, which means that some van-like features (or lack of) remain. Another big difference is their fuel economy – about 37% higher fuel consumption in US Minivans compared to EU MPVs.
The winner – US Minivan with the biggest boot of them all: Kia Carnival (Sedona)
The Kia Carnival (known up to 2021 as Kia Sedona) takes the first spot with the most space in the boot. It offers one of the longest boot lengths and the tallest boot height in the market. You can fit a 200x120cm/79x47inches bed inside the boot and still have room left for cargo.
You will have to pay a bit more for fuel with the Kia Carnival though – it has the second-highest consumption out of all cars in this article.
Kia Carnival (Sedona) boot dimensions
- boot length: 244cm/96inches
- boot height: 122cm/48inches
- boot width (wheel arches): 120cm/47.2inches
2nd largest US Minivan boot: Honda Odyssey
With the longest boot out of all the cars in this article and still good boot height, it’s no surprise that the Honda Odyssey is a popular car to convert into a camper in the US. It is also easy to buy used at a good price, which makes it perfect to throw out the rear seats, build a bed frame and set off on a car camping journey.
It missed the first spot by a narrow margin, because of 4cm/1.5inch lower boot height. It does have a slightly better consumption though.
Honda Odyssey boot dimensions
- boot length: 245cm/96.5inches
- boot height: 118cm/46.5inches
- boot width (wheel arches): 120cm/47.2inches
3rd largest US Minivan boot: Dodge Grand Caravan
The only car in this article that is in the top 5 of Europe and the United States – the Dodge Grand Caravan (well, it’s Chrysler Grand Voyager in the EU top 5, but they are basically the same car). It is just a little bit shorter than the first two minivans, but many buyers don’t mind.
It still offers a very big boot for any camping adventure. You should bear in mind though that it has the worst fuel economy out of all cars in this article.
Dodge Grand Caravan boot dimensions
- boot length: 230cm/90.5inches
- boot height: 115cm/45.2 inches
- boot width (wheel arches): 125cm/49.2 inches
4th largest US Minivan boot: Chrysler Pacifica
The Chrysler Pacifica is in short a Chrysler Grand Voyager with better specs and trim. Being the newer model of the two, it offers better fuel economy and features. It is a popular family minivan that offers an abundance of convenience and safety features for its passengers. It has three rows of seating and plenty of cargo space for carrying items, making it ideal for long road trips.
The interior is stylish and comfortable, with technology such as a 10-inch touchscreen display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, a rear-seat entertainment system and more.
Safety features include blind spot monitoring, adaptive cruise control and lane keep assist to keep you safe on the road. All this combined makes the Chrysler Pacifica a great choice for families who want to travel in comfort and style.
Chrysler Pacifica boot dimensions
- boot length: 230cm/90.5inches
- boot height: 115cm/45.2 inches
- boot width (wheel arches): 123cm/48.3 inches
5th largest US Minivan boot: Toyota Sienna
The Toyota Sienna is a popular family minivan that has been around since 1997. It would place third in terms of boot length, but it also has the lowest boot out of the US cars in this article. What sets it apart from other cars is not anything related to its camping suitability – a large engine (and therefore higher consumption) and many luxuries inside or the latest technology.
Toyota Sienna boot dimensions
- boot length: 240cm/94.5inches
- boot height: 110cm/43.3 inches
- boot width (wheel arches): 122cm/48 inches
Bonus – 6th largest US Minivan boot: Ford Transit Connect Grand (LWB)
I’ll include one more as the 3rd and 4th place are almost the same car. The only actual MPV-style Minivan in the US list, the Ford Transit Connect Grand (LWB = long wheel base) offers the tallest boot of them all. Not as long, but also wider, thanks to its simpler interior, owing to its van origins.
The Transit Connect Passenger Wagon has two rows of seating for up to seven passengers while the other minivans can usually accommodate up to eight passengers in three rows. What you don’t get in terms of boot length, you get in headroom – the length is still good to sleep in and having 10-15cm/4-6inches more headroom really helps.
If you don’t need more than 3 passenger seats, go for the Transit Connect LWB Van version – you’ll get the most cargo space, as there are no seats at the back, only 1 row in the front cabin.
Ford Transit Connect boot dimensions
- boot length: 215cm/84.6inches
- boot height: 129cm/50.8inches
- boot width (wheel arches): 124cm/48.8inches
