Fiat Doblo Camper Review summary

I have chosen the Fiat Doblo Maxi (XL) High Roof for this review as it’s the most suitable car for camping – long, the tallest, flexible seat configuration, good mileage. All other versions are the same except smaller in size.

Summary

If you’re thinking Fiat Doblo for camping, then think of the Maxi XL High Roof version. It is the tallest MPV out there – overtakes the leading VW Caddy by a whopping 25cm, giving you much more headroom or storage space (actually both!). But beware – its overall 213cm height might be too tall for some car park height restrictions.
It’s about 8cm shorter than the Caddy, but still one of the longest cars out there with 217cm boot length. The rear seats can be folded (backrests) or lifted up & tilted forward, or easily removed – even more flexibility (see how in this video).
Combined with good consumption, the Fiat Doblo Maxi High Roof makes an amazing camping car.

2010 – 2020 Fiat Doblo versions + dimensions:

These are for the Cargo (Van version) but should be close enough. The passenger version doesn’t have a bulkhead, so should have more boot length when you push the front seats forward. The width will be shorter in the passenger version – I’ve indicated this in the table from what I could find.

Best Doblo version for camping? The Combi Maxi XL (LWB – high roof [top])

It’s the longest and most of all tallest of all the MPVs – giving you an additional 25cm of headroom!! Beats the Caddy Maxi or NV200 who were some of the longest and tallest – not anymore :). The rear seats can be folded (backrests) or lifted up & tilted forward, or easily removed – even more flexibility (see how in this video).

As you can see in the photos – aside from having lots more headroom, you can utilize the space for storage too. You can lift the bed higher and gain good storage underneath, whilst still having enough room to sit and move around.

If your main criteria for a small camper are its size (or low consumption), then Fiat Doblo XL High Roof should be your choice. It’s the tallest + very long (not the longest, Caddy Maxi beats it by 8cm – 225 vs 217 cm boot length).

One thing to pay attention to is what rear door you’re getting – it comes with a tailgate or a barn door, which isn’t as good for camping as a tailgate (no automatic roof, gets in the way when walking around the car).

I bought a VW Sharan in 2020 – but if I knew about a Fiat Doblo Maxi High roof, I would probably be driving and camping in that one now!
